Notes On The Joypad / 2 Player Version

Eventually I made a 2 player version of the adaptor and did not bother using the joypad, this is the setup I recommend you go with. The details on how to wire in the joypad have been left in for completeness. The reason I discarded the joypad is that for certain games (Star Wars etc) MAME decides that you have an analog joystick. This means that you can only move to extreme on the screen. Press left, you go all the way to the left of the screen, press right all the way to the right etc.

This resulted in a few games being unplayable. So I threw away the joypad and wired in the cursor keys + Ctr/Alt/Space instead.

This is done using exactly the same method as for the start and coin buttons. A hex inverter + a switch.

For the joypad less 1 player version, you don't need the diodes; but to wire in all the controls (inc. 2 starts + coin) you need:

10 x 1K Resistors
2 x 7404 (hex inverter)
3 x 4066 (quad bi-lateral switch)

So, compared to the joypad version, you loose 4 diodes , gain 3 resistors and gain 2 more 4066s.

The 2 player adaptor was simply 'more of the same', I just wired in the standard MAME 2 player direction keys + fire buttons.

For a 2 player joypad less version you need

17 x 1K resistor
3 x 7404
5 x 4066
