Here's a puzzle for you... I didn't realize how alpha files worked until I looked at Mr. Do's King of Dragons file and the CPO. Since we've already established that you figured out how to make an image swirl around for an analog joystick, I'm wondering if there's some way to mask a square texture file (or even a large circular one) using a similar method with a circle mask in the foreground and move the texture in the background without moving the mask or the glare...
I guess this would be limited because trackballs spin infinitely with no clear start or stop points. It's still food for thought.
