* bringing up the good times memory from 2002 from old MAME.net days *

for any of the long time emulation followers that remember the 2002 April Fools joke that Gridle had pulled with Model 2 wip update on old MAME.net web site.

For those that had never visited old MAME.net web site, the site maintainer "Santeri S. / Gridle" would type up MAME wip moments so users could see what was completed over a few days and maybe what to expect in a future MAME release. For April Fools day in 2001 Gridle did a light-hearted wip update that made fun of MAMEdevs, but it was clever and well done without getting users upset.

For April Fools day MAME wip update in 2002, Gridle had posted a Model 2 emulation update that showed 'doctored' images of Model 2 games running in MAME. The chat forums were filled with lots of over-excited fans waiting to try Model 2 emulation in a future release of MAME. When it was discovered later in the day that it was an April Fools prank by Gridle, there were several upset "kidz" that were dismayed that it was a joke by Gridle. A few posted swearing so the forum had to be cleaned up with a few posts having to be deleted.

Model 2 games were not emulated until another few more years had passed...maybe around 2004 or 2005 iirc.

I thought it was a clever April Fools stunt that Gridle pulled in 2002, but not a surprise that some users were to react like that regarding the 2002 April Fools prank of Model 2 being emulated because in 2001 when CPS-2 was first emulated by using XOR files created by Razoola there was huge excitment because an emulator "finalburn" was running some of the CPS-2 games. When the author (Dave) decided to stop doing any more supporting of CPS-2 games, the "kidz" just went nuts with the usual "internet-type" threats on Dave and any others involved with emulator "finalburn" back around spring 2001.

For those that were not there then, MAME was DOS based then before the main development switched to Windows, the versions were still using the b extension for Beta until a full release would appear, the source code updates were a guess to the public while those on MAMEdev list probably had a better guess of what might be in final release version. The great Sega rewrite with sarcasm understanding of the rewrite to maybe be completed in 2006. Asteroid analog audio sounds that took a nosedive regression until Derrick fixed the analog audio in 2005. Tons of stuff not yet emulated. And lots not even imagined or expected back in 2002. Over 20 years gone by while it seems no more than 5 or 10 years ago.

I was disappointed myself in not saving Gridle’s April Fools 2002 WIP prank. And same with PacDude’s infamous flame thread from September 2000 in which arguments between users in that same thread went on for 2 to 3 weeks on old MAME.net forum. It had to do with adult theme images that Gridle posted on WIP posts on old MAME. Net site back in the days. And then the flame thread included complaints about mahjong games shouldn’t be supported in MAME then. It was an absurd thread that could have been a guest on American tv show Jerry Springer back then with fists flying and expletives all about.
