Maybe go through your power management settings for CPU throttling and see if there is a way to dial it back.

I have a T61 running VSTHost for playing virtual instruments live. It's perfect for this, very reliable too, never crashed or bluescreened on me once during a show.
You can still get all the important bits and pieces for it on Amazon. I bought a new motherboard for it once after I had left it in the rain, paid $30 plus shipping lol.
