What do I do when the emulation traps the Mame UI hotkeys?

Hi, I'm a noob, sorry if this question is in the wrong thread...


I have used MAME as an HP9845B emulator.

After the emulation begins it traps the escape and tab keys, preventing me from controlling MAME.

How do I escape gracefully from such an app when escape and tab presses are sent to the emulation, not MAME?
