If I remember correctly(& I could be wrong on this & probably am) there used to be a menu option you could check to do that in the past.
I think it was removed because with the UI part being tacked on, it didn't run in-line with the official MAME code so errors & bug reports didn't match up.
If you don't want to run it from command line try out John's IV/Play and under F1 just add -debug to the options line.
It's fast, has a small footprint(memory & space-wise), simple but does a lot, and just plain nice to use.
Better than a batch file, that's for sure!
