bootlegs and hacks have been vital to get MAME where it is today.
many encryptions on original games were only figured out due to bootleg references.
Some major arcade developers only exist because they started off making bootlegs, for example Tehkan (now Tecmo) apparently hacked up Phoenix to make Pleiades, and Toaplan's first game is said to be a hack of some Mahjong game.
Likewise many got their break making Space Invaders hacks and knock-offs (plenty of which are still yet to be dumped)
