[SOLVED] Change OSD (in-game menu) font but keep MameUI interface
04/20/20 04:19 PM

A question about MAMEUI64 (using the latest .220): I'd like to know how to change the On-Screen Display font in-game, but without disabling the main MameUI interface.

(The OSD font = the one you get when you press TAB or ` while playing a game. MAME has a default OSD font which looks like a particularly ugly version of Tahoma- that's the one I'd like to change.)

There's a command-line option that does this: "-uifont font.bdf". This works, but it also changes the launcher interface completely- I guess it switches to the default MAME interface ("MEWUI" I think.... or something else that contains "ew", which describes it quite well).

How can I set a different OSD font while keeping the MameUI front-end interface?

EDIT: a couple of .ini edits I tried:
  • Edited INI\mame.ini, changed the option "uifont" from "default" to a font name / .bdf font file: No effect.
  • Edited INI\ui.ini, and tried to put the "uifont" option there with the same values: No effect.
  • Edited MAMEUI.ini, and tried as above: No effect.

EDIT 2 (SOLVED): Ok, found where I went wrong. Editing INI\mame.ini *does* have an effect, but then if the game already has its own .ini in that folder, the "uifont" setting in the game's .ini will override the main one in mame.ini. So the solution is either
  1. to replace the "uifont" setting in all .ini files globally, or
  2. to delete all game-specific .ini files, so next time that they are saved, the uifont setting will be inherited from mame.ini
Still cumbersome, and I don't really understand why game-specific .ini save every setting even when it hasn't been changed from the value in the global mame.ini. But at least it works!
