Actually, the option in your mame.ini you want to change is "-view".
Default for this is "auto," which means MAME will pick the first available view from whichever of these things exists in your setup:
External clone artwork Internal clone layout External parent artwork Internal parent layout Special layout as defined in src/emu/layout Horizont/Vertical layout
(Got that mostly right, I think).
The last option in the list above, most every game has, and the first view in that will begin with "Standard".
So if you have in your name.ini:
-view Standard
It will go straight to the default view for most games, as if you had no artwork.
tl;dr ... Just read the last three sentences. The rest is background, so you know how it works.
