Puzzling. In theory, all you need to do is duplicate your MAME directory and replace all of the roms, artwork, and .exe's with the
ones in the HBMAME bundle and it should run the same way. ?? Granted, I always use hbmameui instead of hbmame, but I've never run into any issues.

I continue to add new HBMAME artwork all the time.
