I was looking at a twin Cyber Cycles arcade machine to figure out a "Bus Error" from one boardset (hopefully narrowed down to a combination of improper airflow and some orange slime on an mrom pcb). While I took a look at both cpu pcbs, I noticed the linking chip was different, C139 on one board and C422 on the other). The driver states that both chips are nearly identical (proof of that is I let the two run in attract after the cleaning process for a while and no known errors occurred). The following could apply to both linking custom chips:
- C422's only difference was support for firewire cables because that chip was used in Namco System 23 onwards and most of these games used firewire cables for linking.
- Namco had to test that C422 chip a lot for compatibility with C139 for CPU pcb replacement/repair purposes.
It's remarkable that C139 linking chip worked so well it was used for nearly 10 years (or more if this was used in System 246 and 256).
