There are some differing views of whatever the item was, but it is another example of the 'clueless clod' at work of 'not being self aware' of awkward moments in which he stumbles along the way by making himself look foolish as usual.
A post in the thread shows another fine example with scotch tape on the tie as if that is going to work in making his tie appearance be less embarrassing.
