yeah, that's true. since Bombs Away has more stuff to understand how the original game was, it would be probably better to do that one before Cobra Gunship (though i imagine that CG was a bit like Red Baron but simpler)
anyway, i did a little puzzling of those halved sprites and this was the result:


also, i've saved some screenshots from those Attack (Taito) videos, hopefully i can recreate the sprites in the most similar way to the original ones.
