As long as they weren't kept outdoors in a storage shed in the backyard [actual true scenario], your tapes should have a better chance of being readable.
A relative's former boyfriend was a 'doomsday prepper survivalist' and had kept somewhere of about 1500 to 2000 VHS tapes that taught survivalist training techniques in a storage shed in the backyard in Colorado. The boyfriend had nowhere else to store them. So the tapes went from a baked condition to a freezing condition all year long.
No loss imo because the handwritten labels on the various VHS tapes had questionable contents such as one of the tape's labels had a description that read "how to fend off aliens that are bigger than 15 feet tall with a handgun". You know......useful fighting reference material.
The shed was eventually torn down and the workers doing construction work probably had a laugh or two when reading label contents while the degraded/no longer readable VHS tapes were being disposed.
The ex-boyfriend supposedly moved on to Idaho or Montana.
