Sega/Gremlin Borderline analog audio finally for Pete *edit*
09/06/17 12:33 AM

Mainly for the users that have been here on MW forums since early post-2000 AD years
(2001 to 2003) when Loonybin forum was untamed back then. :-)

One of the posters was trying to recall a tank based game he had briefly noticed as kid
back in Greece during his child years. All the time he was certain it was a game that
player drives a tank.....far from it. It was Sega's Borderline which players navigate a
jeep. Pete was disappointed that audio wasn't supported (all analog discrete audio
sounds) yet.

While external audio samples are okay such as what Kale and Kold666 did in 2017...

vicdual.cpp: Added sound samples to Borderline [Angelo Salese, Corrado Tomaselli]

The eventual goal would be netlist/analog audio emulation instead of relying on external
audio samples although that meant more components having to be emulated first before even
being able to begin working on audio of any of the games.

In case kazzy visits later, he'll be happy to know that Borderline will now have all the
analog audio sounds emulated thanks to beta-tester's work with Borderline.

* changed MB4391 function to pow2 to shorten sounds a bit
* changed trigger inputs in vicdual.cpp to fit more to the sounds i remember.
* moved trigger mapping from vicdual to nl_brdrline

Two guys (one on far left side and other on far right side) that can now be happy that
both games have analog audio emulated. Hard to believe that soCal meet was back in 2006.

btw: This is from an old post years earlier.

Pete is on far left holding a Borderline manual since it is his favorite vicdual
hardware game (Dec. 2006 soCali MAME meet went to Round Table pizza and also to Camelot
miniature golf course for arcade games), David/Zephyr, Mr. Do, and me with Frogs manual
since Frogs is my favorite vicdual hardware game.

This is Pete's page. https://www.youtube.com/user/kastellorizo

Pete or kazzy or kastellorizo (used different user names on the MW forum) used to visit
here regularly from years 2001 to 2003. And returned a few years later and visited off
and on.

This is an oldie, but goodie, sort of amusing video clip of where I was describing the
parts for a gambling game called King Pin which drewcifer had picked up from an ebay
listing back in fall 2006 to Mr. Do while (Pete, Mr. Do, David/Zephyr and I) were dining
at Round Table pizza parlor in Fullerton, CA. This was in December 2006 when Pete was
attending the IEEE conference that was held in San Diego, CA that year. Pete traveled
via Amtrak to Fullerton where I met Pete. Mr Do. and David were also there at the train
station as well to meet Pete. It was a good MAME meet and also getting to meet Pete in
person for the first time.

The entertaining part about the video clip was when I was flustered when describing
something to Mr. Do and had to start all over of what I was explaining of the parts that
drewcifer had purchased from a seller at the time in fall 2006. David was laughing and
Pete was busy sneaking with getting a video of me while I was talking at the moment. It
is amusing seeing video clip once again many years later.

Somewhat visible in the video clip is a box of manuals and schematics that I had brought
to the MAME meet. The box probably had 100 various items of manuals and schematics. The
item I was holding in my hand was an animal call that I had forgot to take out of the box
before placing paperwork inside the box when heading to the MAME meet.

If reading the comments on Youtube of the video clip made years earlier, jop's reference
was regarding my favorite arcade video game of Gremlin's Frogs. Frogs uses discrete
hardware components to generate audio sound effects. The Frogs manual includes the
schematics pages that show how audio is generated. The schematics are referred when
trying to emulate audio sounds and Frogs is one of the games where only a portion of the
sound effects are emulated.
