He may also be getting matrixed Dolby Surround, the VHS-era precursor to Dolby Digital. It generates rear content from the difference between the front left and right, and it generates center from content that's equal on both front left and right. It's better than nothing, but it's far from taking advantage of the capabilities of that setup.
