Help understanding 'video options' settings in MAME TAB menu

I understand what 'bezels' does, it toggles on/off the artwork. And 'crop view' gives you a full view of the artwork, or just fills in missing screen area. But what do these other settings do? I have artwork in the respective folders (e.g. "cpanels"), but toggling this setting off/on seems to have no effect.

Can someone explain what these settings do? Particulary, backdrops, overlays, Cpanels, and Marquee.
