Hi. Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate it.
To sum it all up, it seems like authenticity and keeping things 100% accurate to the original experience to that of the arcade cabinets is the main philosophy by the majority of the MAME fans. I suppose I'm kind of a minority here; it's like swearing in the church by suggesting a more console-like experiences for MAME games in general.
Many games that first came to the arcades got ported to home consoles back in the day, and thereby in some cases got the difficulty lowered down by some degree and the game gave you a limited number of lives and continues, often bound to the chosen difficulty setting in-game. Because of the weaker hardware of the home consoles, the graphics often had a slight downgrade, and 4 player modes in beat' em up games was to my limited knowledge missing in most cases.
If you take two games like Golden Axe and Altered Beasts, I personally prefer the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive versions of those games than the arcade originals with better graphics, because of the gameplay-adjustments made to make the games more fit for home console owners. Heck, I even prefer Alex Kidd in The Lost Stars Sega Master System version way better than the arcade original even though the Master System version has way uglier graphics by the very same reason.
