Getting people to stay and become long term regulars and become a community, hell even getting a number of people to sign up at all. It's mostly luck and timing. Most messageboards fail horribly and are start to finish ghost towns.
I don't know much about EmuChrist. Back in the day (2002ish) it seemed like the place where people with a stick up their ass went to yell about their emulation scene issues without having to worry about being banned, or the place people went after they were banned from other sites, or people who liked emulation but wanted to go against the grain of having to respect one another. They did have some really funny stuff sometimes though. I read it every once in a while. At any rate they had a community and you let that go and you lose friends plain and simple.
