No creature-proofing other than spider-proofing and having a fenced area for the town that has a grid of torches placed with 3 spaces in between, to suppress any mob spawns.

No, it's just that as far as I'm aware, vanilla spawns new players inside the chunks around 0,0 but anywhere within them that doesn't have an unobstructed view of the sky, which meant that we can't get people to spawn on one set location without it being inordinately huge. Also, a ravine partially intersects the spawn chunks, and we've safety lit it, but as a result people tend to spawn down there sometimes too.

The actual burn damage was because I warned him that he should double-check the fire spread rules on the MC wiki before lighting his fireplace, but he didn't listen to me.
