It harms MAME because it means the preferred way for these things to be dumped is ripping the files and bypassing MAME entirely, people aren't doing original unmodified dumps, the original unmodified versions are NOT being preserved. It encourages people who have these things / have access to these things to do it the wrong way.
I've say it's fun to watch a trainwreck sometimes, but it's quite alarming that people seem to prefer the trainwreck here.
We had a similar problem with NeoGeo back in the day, where instead of original dumps we were getting ones hacked to run in the more popular emulators. It took YEARS to clean that up (and we're only just starting to be sure all our dumps are correct now)
That was for common games, this is for less common ones, it's an absolute disaster, if it were an oil spill all our oceans would be black right now.
