Can you identify what this mechanism might be? (sword/knife related)

The attached pic has an arrow pointing to what I'm referring to. My guess is that it's some kind of lock release... You'd slide the part along the groove, and that'd move something else so the sword could be removed from a sheath or scabbard.

That is just my assumption. I don't know if anyone here is into.... cutlery. But if you are, and would have an idea what that thing does then I'd appreciate the help/info.

I've looked online, but can't find anything similar.

Note: That part that has the 2 torx screws in it that almost resembles a high-heel.... There are 2 of those, one on each side, and they're 15mm apart (and each is 3mm thick). Why mention this? That makes for a gap between them and the carbon fiber sheet that is covering the handle part of the sword.

If that thumb lock (that's what I'm going to call it for now) moves anything... I'd figure it might be these things, or perhaps that 'L' shaped thing just to the left of it.
