Muslim SJ girl's viral letter to Trump: I wish you had grown up like me.
12/20/15 09:04 AM

"I wasn't taught to kill others with my hands but rather try and help them with my words."
That is part of a letter that a 17 year-old student at Mission San Jose High School wrote to Donald Trump.
I thought her letter was well done. You may agree with her. You may disagree with her. But either way, I hope you'll agree that it's worth reading. Here is what Parwana Khazi wrote:
Dear Donald Trump,
For as long as I can remember, my parents told me to respect everyone, to not judge groups based on the actions of individuals, to investigate thoroughly before accusing and blaming others.
My grandparents told me to see the good in everyone, to put myself in other's shoes and see things from their perspective, to believe people are innocent till proven guilty not vice versa.
My religious scholars told me to think with calmness, act with kindness, and speak with full awareness.
This is what I was taught growing up.
I wasn't taught to kill others with my hands but rather try and help them with my words.
I wasn't taught to cause havoc and chaos but instead to work to find a solution for it.
I wasn't taught to be a terrorist but rather a human being.
Today, seventeen years later, I wish that you too had grown up with such teachings.
Maybe then you wouldn't suggest having Muslims wear IDs.
Maybe then you wouldn't think a Muslim database was a legitimate solution.
Maybe then you wouldn't express interest in banning Muslims from coming into this country.
I say this loudly so everyone can hear, I am a Muslim-American and I'm sure as hell proud of both parts of that label.
But before being a Muslim or an American, I'm a human just like my neighbor, my teacher, my friend, my coach, and yes, even you.
I hope and pray for the day you finally understand that and stop blaming Muslims for the actions of those who do not even understand the essence of the religion of Islam.
Maybe then you will be able to see this world as it is instead of what you perceive it to be.
Assalamualikum (peace be upon you), An American born and raised Muslim

I spoke by email with Parwana's father. He told me:
"Parwana did not really think her letter would reach many people outside of her circle of Facebook friends; she was merely putting her thoughts into writing and hoping it would positively affect even one of her friends."
I'm sure Parwana would appreciate any comments you might have. I'll leave you with a quote from Marie Curie. I think it's very appropriate given the climate right now.
She said:
"Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less."
