interesting, I know it used to crash quite a lot, but when MooglyGuy made the blending fixes I played it a fair bit without seeing it crash.
do you have -mt turned on? we know -mt is unsafe in certain situations, although I wouldn't expect it to make a difference in this one.
the trace that was posted suggests it's in the rendering code (although turning off -mt won't turn off threaded poly rendering) so it's possible the rendering code isn't 100% thread-safe and more likely to crash on certain machines if it ends up attempting to render invalid data due.
running with mame64 mk4 -numprocessors 1 will force MAME to only use 1 core I believe, might be interesting to see if that changes the behaviour (will make the emulation very slow tho)
