I know Sawyer from his short stories, and of course Brin and Bear... I've possibly read both Bears, can't say offhand.

In fact... Sawyer... Hominids. It was printed in serial format in one of the two SF mags I stopped subscribing to when they finally piled up too high. Meant to get/reread it and the two sequels, but the backlog is still there. The science is probably outdated already; stories in those tended to focus on cutting-edge theories. This one used a neutrino detector as an inter-dimensional gateway, as a plot device to... explore... modern society directly, contrasting it with the fictional hominid society he'd created.
