While using merged with zip will reduce the file count and keep your clones and files organized. You won't benefit from the space saving of 7-zip compression.
I'm not sure what is taking place on your system, but I've never had any problems like you describe.
If you ever go back to T7Z make sure your 7z.exe is 9.28a version and you're using optimized settings in your CMP
settings/compressor/7Z
The idea here is to rebuild with CMP using 0 compression because T7Z has to decompress the archive in order to re-compress it for processing. So it's not optimal for CMP to provide any type of compression when rebuilding because T7Z will take care of that after your CMP is done rebuilding/scanning.
