There was a choice. With QuickEdit Mode disabled in properties you had to right-click, Mark (or open application menu from top left, Edit, Mark) then drag to select. With QuickEdit mode enabled you could just click and drag. QuickEdit was disabled by default, but it was one of those things that "power users" always enabled. It looks like it might be enabled by default in Windows 10.
