Did you miss where he said "MSX"? I still have my PX7 working, I'm pretty sure I know what MSX DOS does and doesn't do. It just gets you a couple of extra BASIC commands for disk file I/O and a few ROM entry points for doing disk file I/O from machine language programs.
Apple II, Commodore 64, and a bunch of other 8-bit computers with their own DOSes were still alive and well in 1987. MS-DOS was definitely not the only DOS in 1987. And very few people actually used multitasking MS-DOS anyway.
