I think what you're looking for is called "pixel resize" or something like that. Basically it just doubles the pixels. I think the one limitation is that you have to pick a power of 2 so that it never has to interpolate (which causes blurring). So you can enlarge 100%, 200%, 400%, 800%, etc...
Also, once you enlarge it and paste it back into word, it has to shrink it down to fit in the same space which probably has the effect of making it seem more crisp.
EDIT: Another thought. When you resize images with a limited amount of colors, some programs will increase the color depth to allow for the blurred pixel colors of interpolated pixels. If you resize in a program that doesn't increase the color depth, the resulting image is limited to the original color palette, which may also seem sharper.
