You already have the answer. MPC-HC and VLC expecially can play *everything* without any additional codec. They use pre-compiled libraries for decoding. WMP (I don't know new versions, I never upgraded the default installed on my WIN7) requires external codecs and is not so light-weight and efficient like the free open source media players I mentioned (there are a lot more)
