I have 5 year old computer that I connected to a TV as a media device. Every now and then, it will completely shut off and an ambulance-like alarm will start sounding continuously. Any ideas what the problem could be? At first I thought it might be a CMOS battery failure issue, but if that was the case, it wouldn't affect Windows right in the middle of doing something.
Edit: I installed Windows 8.1 recently and forgot to disable it from going into sleep mode. I think that might be why it was shutting down, but that doesn't explain the alarm. Also, will a Windows 8 machine go into sleep mode if you're watching stuff on YouTube or copying files to an external drive?
