you have two cores? then add -j3 to your make line:
make -j3 STRIP_SYMBOLS=1
or
make -j3 PTR64=1 STRIP_SYMBOLS=1 (for 64-bit MAME)
(STRIP_SYMBOLS=1 is for reducing MAME executable size).
