Dude, just build a real HTPC. If you can't afford it, you can't afford to faff around with modern emulators, sorry to break it to you. These things are cheap as hell for a good reason.
I don't get why it's so hard for you to comprehend that the modern version of MAME would be slower than a shitty port of a 14 year old version of MAME. The emulator has progressed significantly in both features and in abstraction in the intervening decade and a half, and that comes at the cost of CPU time. You sound like those people who are astounded at the fact that they're not getting a good frame rate in Minecraft on their Core 2 Duo with shitty integrated graphics. New features and improvements come at a cost. Deal with it and stop even remotely thinking that one of these cheap-ass little boards is going to work well for MAME.
