Because you get about 3-4 bits of dynamic range out of the 16 that CD has on current music. In arcade terms, this means you're buying albums with the same sound quality as the punch sounds in Street Fighter II. I am... not a fan. Foo Fighters' "The Colour and the Shape" from 1997 was the last major rock album where they actually tried to make it sound good.
