Thanks blinddog, the photos look great. Unfortunately it's still not working properly.
I'm displaying the gear based on inputtag="P1" and inputmask={the bit for that gear}. It sort-of works, but the gear only shows up when you are holding down the button for that gear (try out the attached file to see what I mean). I also tried it with inputtag="IN0" (which is what I thought it should be based on the driver) but that doesn't work at all. It seems like either those bits are not changing state, or the LAY file can't see them. I've never seen a LAY file for shifter with more than 2 states so I'm kind of in uncharted waters here. If some of the more experienced people here could take a look at this, I'd really appreciate it.
