That would most likely be the precise reason. Dean Saglio has a 1.2 Million on Mame [http://replay.marpirc.net/r/dkong] and there's no reason to presume that to be the absolute best.
There's just too much randomness with fireballs and wild barrels to be able to figure a definitive highest score.
Ms. Pac-Man is just absolutely ruthless though, as you never know how many extra screens you will get and it also comes down to pure randomness of fruit development later on. [What you want a Banana every time? How 'bout a Cherry instead and I'll keep the extra points?] It can take a killer game with all possible extra screens and make your score less then if someone really lucked out but had no extra screens.
One would presume it should have an even bigger following alone for that challenge... but I'd have to believe KOK: A Fistful of Quarters is why DK became such a hot game to run and spawned such a huge event every year [The Kong Off].
NOW!!! If there was a specialized ROMSet that specifically fixed the KS issue [I know someone had showed how to fix the code a long time ago... can't recall the name off hand] and it was run at an event, there might be SOME who would go for that alone to see how far they could marathon DK, but there would always be competition on a KS set because there will always be a desire to see how high it can go with the limitation.
