MAME is often used on machines (arcade cabinets, portables/handhelds, HTPCs) where pulling out a mouse/keyboard to fuck with .ini files or whatever is not optimal. This will (eventually) provide all the same functionality that people like yourself who simply run MAME on a boring beige PC take for granted. And you haven't previously objected that being able to control MAME and bring up the Tab menu and stuff with a keyboard/mouse is a vision statement violation.
Anyone with a cabinet who's had a party where people screwed up your config trying to switch games will understand being able to pull out your phone and switch games, even if we aren't quite there yet. Because everything's based on common web standards, it should even be possible to have iOS/Android apps that provide an even more streamlined interface.
