I never heard of doing it in reverse... I've helped many people pushing forward then popping the clutch while in 1st gear(release then immediately depress again when you hear the engine turn over, maybe with a little bit of gas too). As long as your alternator isn't screwed, that should work with no battery at all.
Don't think it helps much with an automatic transmission though...
Just broke my personal record for number of consecutive days without dying!
