eta2: To answer your question: You probably could use a fan part... Or anything with a smooth, ball bearing type of rotation. But you may want something a bit heavier so that it has that spinning flywheel momentum to it.
Regarding what the guy did in the video....
Ehm.... What is he going to do when he gets up into the later stages where the aim-line has to go up and down?
Other than that it seems like an excellent idea. But he really didn't need to put that dowel rod into the mouse. Just have it attached to the part where the mouse is put in. As for the up & down (push & pull) motions.... There's probably a few elaborate ways to take care of that.... And it's been so long since I've played dotron, I can't recall if the up and down are analog (since there are multiple lines)... Anyway, it could involve both mouse buttons (digital) or the mouse wheel (analog).
eta: Now that I think about it - a very nice 'Discs of Tron Spinner' had 2 switches for up and down... So it must be digital.
