I just recently did read some about the videotape wars and while I can't say about real picture quality since I haven't compared them side by side ever (I don't think I've ever seen any real Betamax), by the specs they were largely the same.
Let me clarify that. At normal speed, Betamax blew VHS up by superior quality, less colour blurring and other stuff. Nobody argues with that. But to compete with VHS longer tape duration, so you don't have to change tapes in the middle of recording a sport match, they slowed the speed, affecting the resolution and lowering the quality, thus the results were pretty much the same for the everyday use.
By the time Sony thought that people would NOT prefer picture quality over price and duration, VHS was licensed to all the japanese majors and was ahead on the market share almost everywhere. All the modifications Sony did to the original plan (starting to license to other companies, lowering the prices, extending tape duration, etc) arrived late. They somewhat extended the Betamax life but not too much really.
That's my understanding of what I did read about this during friday night, which I guess makes me an expert of international recognition.
