Compile MAME to use default horz/vert artwork?

I'm sure I've seen an article on MAMEworld on how to compile MAME so that it uses default artwork for horizontal and vertical games that don't have their own artwork. I can't seem to find it anywhere, now!

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?
