Low persistence display mode for MAME and MESS?
04/04/14 05:04 AM

Arcade games and motion blur don't really mix. Black frame insertion is a proven technique that eliminates most motion blur. 120hz and 144hz displays are becoming fairly common now, and I'm wondering if it'd be possible for MAME/MESS to implement a low persistence mode using black frame insertion.

GroovyMAME has a somewhat crude implementation:

It works, but the problem with it is that you have to force every game to run at 120hz, which means that any game not running at 60hz is running too fast or too slow.

What would really be fantastic is if we could get a low persistence mode that ran at exactly double the refresh rate of the game. That way, the speed would be accurate and we would still eliminate the motion blur. G-Sync monitors support an incredibly high degree of precision with refresh rates. I did extensive testing with a G-Sync monitor and found that it handled every bizarre refresh rate MAME could throw at it. 144hz is enough to handle doubling or quadrupling the refresh rate of any arcade game.

It would be a really great emulation solution to run games at double their native refresh rate (or quadruple for the 30hz games) with black frame insertion.

Thanks!
