M1 hasn't been updated for some time, and there are no plans to further update the existing codebase. There will eventually be an M1ng once all the relevant MAME components are in modern form, but that's going to be probably this fall at the most optimistic, and more likely next year.

You might be able to isolate the sounds in MAME by fiddling with the individual chip channel volumes in the menu though.
