How to move a damn java window: highly advanced black-belt question.
02/25/14 05:41 AM

Ok... this request seems so stupid, but it's not. It's highly advanced black-belt level headache material.

On my Mac 10.9.1 I was using a Java app, and moved the window way up to the top such that it's window menu bar is hidden by the desktop window menu bar... meaning that bitch it stuck there forever. You can't move the window if you can't grab it by the window menu bar... it has no side borders for what ever reason. Mac, unlike MS, has no keyboard shortcut for moving a window. Mac also doesn't have any way to hide the desktop window menu bar. Relaunching, even deleting and reinstalling the app doesn't change this window's location when it opens.

I've been trying to solve this for over a week.

Things that forums recommend, but don't work:
1. Change display resolution. Doesn't work, it stays at the extreme top of the screen regardless of resolution.

2. F9 to tile the widows... nope. The f9 key does nothing on 10.9.1

3. Goto application window menu bar and choose zoom... the genius who wrote this app didn't give it a window menu.

4. Delete the .plist file... yeah... if I could find it. It's a java app, so the libraries are a mess, and no .plist that I can find matches.

5. Move it to a second desktop... yeah, guess what... it defaults to the extreme top of that new desktop top.

6. One forum said "Don't do that. You can't recover windows put too high on a mac." I'll get right on that.

7. Create a keyboard shortcut for 'zoom'... this sounded promising. The keyboard shortcut I made was cmd-option-8.... it works! On everything else I have, mmm but not this java app jacked up to hell. :/

Although I did leanr a kewl trick in all this... if you hold down a key long enough, a menu of accented versions of that key pops up. I never knew that! Very useful, considering I type in foreign languages ALOT!

This is SUCH A STUPID PROBLEM!!! There are 8 years EIGHT YEARS of forums of people asking this same question. Apple never thought... what if a user puts the window so high up he can't grab it's menu bar anymore... aw fuck 'em."
