What's "fucked up" is how desperate many people have become.
Our suburban neighborhood has had a rash of petty thefts from unlocked cars, on the street or even in motion-sensor-lit carports. Basically, someone's just going door-to-door trying handles, and looking (almost exclusively) for the loose change many keep in their cars to feed toll booths and parking meters.
We always lock our car, but we forgot to, one night last month; we came out in the morning to find the contents of the console compartment scattered on the passenger seat, with the change "cache" apparently undiscovered. -JW
