"Yugoslavia" was the result of people drawing arbitrary lines on a map after a world war and was never going to end well. The languages in the country (Serb, Croat, etc.) are virtually identical, not really any more different than US vs British English even though they’re written with different scrips. A lot of the resentment came from trying to force everyone to use the Serb conventions when there was no issue with understanding each other anyway.
