Otherwise, any files you have from old versions that are still valid in new versions will remain in their respective folders (and be used) and persist after an upgrade obsoletes them. Yes, it's ridiculous but I've come across many web pages that just won't work right on IE and work best on Chrome For example, distance learning sites that use blackboard. Just broke my personal record for number of consecutive days without dying!
