Re: Better card ATI 3D Rage ii vs. Jaton 3D Force G32

You're kidding, right?

First off, I think both of those cards are AGP. The Jaton 3D Force G32 uses the Trident Blade chipset, which was released in 1999, I think. The ATI 3D Rage II is even older from around 1996 or so. I don't think either of them has driver support under XP or newer operating systems. Assuming they are PCI, they both have really small amounts of video memory compared to modern cards, so I'm not sure how well they'd work with recent builds of MAME.

My advice?

Pick up a used ATI X300/X600 PCIe card off of Ebay, then use Calamity's modified ATI drivers with GroovyMAME. Check out the links in my signature for more info on GroovyMAME and the modified drivers. For using MAME with an arcade monitor, GroovyMAME is the only way to go.

If you want to go with a newer card, another option is picking up a used ATI Radeon 4000 series PCIe card. Just avoid the ones that are based on "mobile" chipsets. I know people have had problems with some of the Radeon HD 4350 models. None of the newer ATI HD cards (5000 series, 6000 series, etc...) will work, so don't bother.

Either way, I HIGHLY recommend picking up a copy of Windows XP 64-bit Edition. You'll get a sizable performance boost by using a 64-bit operating system and a 64-bit version of MAME (or GroovyMAME). Windows 7 is not very friendly for use with arcade monitors.
