I didn't get that from his movies. Some were not as good as I hoped going in (like Chasing Amy) but Mallrats is my favorite over Clerks and I don't think Clerks 2 disappointed in the slightest bit - no matter how hard people wanted it to. Even before it came out I remember people ranting about how it would never be able to stack up, what a load of shit.
In regard to your response though I have noticed that pattern with some artists, like in music a band's first album will be amazing and then everything afterward is downhill. I think it has to do with the time they spend on the first project, churning it over and over perfecting it for years until they get their first break at which case they release a cream of the crop condensed kickassness, then everything after that is just sort of "whatever comes out next we'll put on an album". Stone Roses come to mind.
