All batteries can vent the hydrogen gas, but when a battery is fully dead any application of electricity to it can result in a breakdown of the water in the battery which puts the perfect stoichiometric combination of H2 and O2 in the battery.
Still, a day later, I have gained much respect for car batteries and have a good laugh with my friends about it. I still say I earned my man card by helping a bro with a 100% discharged battery replace it in 18 degree weather with no proper tools and a good jolt. Lol.
